905 Adventures Episode 01

The Park

The first place I visited was this park at the end of Queen street. Besides this park there isn’t much else past it, just the sign welcoming you to downtown and then the giant hole in the ground that is the river which splits Canada and the US.

This park was part of Niagara’s New Downtown revitalization project, so it’s fairly new. There isn’t any sand here, it’s all made of this soft rubber-like material so when kids take a spill they don’t always lose teeth. As is Canadian custom they put up a random piece of art along with an inuksuk (complete with do not climb sign). I think the ratio is one art piece per inuksuk in any given place. It might be two inuksuks per art though, I’m not sure. It’s probably written down somewhere.

The most recent story I heard about this park is from my friend’s mom. She said she was there one day with her grandkids. While the kids were playing she overheard one of the other mothers calling her four year old a stupid bitch because she pissed her pants, announcing it to everyone so all the other kids could hear her, then refused to do anything about it’ choosing to let her sit in her own filth and cry. My friend’s mom doesn’t go to this park anymore because she’s afraid she’ll get into a fight with this woman or someone like her. It’s a nice park but the locals will ruin it for you. A lot of things in the falls are similar.

The Water molecule statue is here. I think it has something to do with how the city produces a lot of hydro? I should have read the sign. I’ll read signs from now on.

The Inuksuk is also here. Do not climb it. This is what Inuksuks are. If you don’t feel like clicking that link, inuksuks are rocks that people pile on top of each other that vaguely resemble a person. Some places in Canada they’ll be everywhere, especially along highways. They’re not meant to be climbed.

What surprised me most about this place was that the chess pieces were all or mostly accounted for. My girlfriend speculated that they must take them in at night.

05/15/2013 I can’t remember what happened today. I would wager that I didn’t accomplish a whole lot.

05/16/2013 Worked and played vidya. I stayed up incredibly late doing nothing.

05/17/2013 I woke up to my friend right in my face, telling me he wants to go for a coffee. It took me an hour or so to finally get up. Besides this I didn’t do a whole lot since I was short on sleep. I’ve been lazy lately, from consistently not getting enough sleep.

05/18/2013 part 1 As soon as I got up we went over to my parent’s place to collect my government money. We didn’t stick around because mom still wasn’t in tip top shape. We went home and made sloppy joes after grabbing some quick ingredients. The last sloppy joe I had was when I was 12, and I didn’t appreciate it. In the morning we went for a walk on a trail that I can’t remember the name of. It has a waterfall and a mill. The name sounds like DQ, but I doubt the name was an acronym.

05/12/2013 Mother’s day has been delayed. She had a head cold when I got there so I stayed for a little bit, gave her flowers, stole some food and then dipped.

05/13/2013 I’ve been nearly passing out at work almost on a daily basis for the past few weeks so I took today to get some extra sleep. I’m not good at getting to sleep, so if I want 8 hours of sleep I need to get into bed 4 hours before my actual bed time. My typical worst case scenario goes like so: The first hour I spend thinking about things ceaselessly. Usually things I don’t want to be thinking about then. Useless, but entertaining thoughts that won’t stop. I wish I were one of those people that can turn their brains off, but I’m not. The second hour I spend sweating, tossing and turning. The third hour I spend thinking about things that are stressful, or scary, like my eventual death, or the death of people I care about and how I might react to it. Thoughts of debt are in the third hour too, along with the possibility of getting diseases/disorders/losing a limb. Somewhere through the third hour is when I throw the blankets off entirely and lay there staring at the ceiling wide awake, then get up to use the bathroom and get a drink. I cool off, maybe do some jumping jacks to tire myself out a bit more and then I get back into bed. Then I usually have to accept that I’m not getting any sleep that day and how I’ll deal with going into a night shift on no sleep. After I do that I usually fall asleep somewhere during the fourth hour. Partway through my sleep I usually have to get up to use the bathroom and every now and then I’ll wake up from a nightmare. The other day I jumped up from a dead sleep because I had a nightmare I developed schizophrenia. The best case scenario for sleep is that I’ll get to sleep within 2 hours, but I have to be pretty exhausted for that.

05/11/2013 We went to TCAF to experience smells like never before. Holy. I thought FanExpo would have been worse but no. I guess because TCAF is free the unwashed feel more at home. Due to delays, and having no money there wasn’t much for me there either, so it was mostly just shuffling through crowds and waiting in lines. I’m making it sound worse than it was. Despite all that I still enjoyed the trip, I just wish I wasn’t so broke at the moment.

05/09/2013 Played board games with a few friends. First we played a game called Elder Sign, a game about preventing monsters like C’thulu from being summoned. Dark arts, the arcane, lovecraftian type of stuff. We randomly selected our characters, and I ended up with a gangster who could handle very little before going insane. I should also mention that you need to keep your character’s sanity in check via an RPG-esque health marker system. It was a pretty cool co-op game involving strategic dice rolling. The second game was called Pandemic, another strategy co-cop game. In this one you work together as various outbreak specialists to prevent the earth from succumbing to plagues and diseases. I ended up as a quarantine specialist who could prevent disease from spreading from adjacent places on the board. We won both games but didn’t follow the rules properly for pandemic. The gf was a great host tonight, supplying everyone with guacamole, pizza muffins, and sangria. I drank a few beers and some sangria and when everyone took off the alcohol struck me and I slept hard.

905 Adventures: A Resident’s Perspective on Niagara Falls Ontario.

Entry# 00: Introduction.

Niagara Falls Ontario is a place a lot of tourists visit. It’s well known for the giant waterfall and tourism area, complete with corrupt casino. I’ve always thought that if I went to another place to be a tourist I’d want to see how the residents live and what the place is like through their eyes.

In this tumblr exclusive series I’ll be visiting place by place, taking pictures and writing articles starting with the downtown area. I’ll be writing a little about the history of it, if I know it, but mostly my own personal experiences. The places I’ll be writing about will most likely not be exciting or particularly interesting, but that’s the real 905 for you.

The point of doing this: to get me outside on the weekends in the early hours of the morning, where I’m awake but no one else is. I’m a night worker so there are always extensive hours of every day that I spend alone in silence, and I need more shit to keep me busy.

05/04/2013 Slept for 3 hours then went to a BBQ. After that we went home for a party we were throwing. Only 3 people showed up, so we just played Mario and drank. We don’t have enough friends in the city to throw small parties anymore it seems. Figures too, since we just got a big enough place to host at.

05/05/2013 We went for a nice spring morning walk, then sat on the porch sippin’ iced beverages. My girlfriend told me that the chairs are called Arondak or Atorondak (maybe Adirondack?) or something or other chairs, which sounds like the name of a villain from a Fantasy novel. Adirondack the Mindflayer or something I have never heard that word in my life but I’ve been sitting on that type of chair since forever.
